During the 1660s the French first started fortifying that location overlooking Grenada’s natural land lock harbour. However, with the relocation of the town in 1700, it was rebuilt during 1706 – 1710 and the new town was called Fort Royale. In 1763, the island was ceded to Great Britain and the fort was renamed Fort George after King George III.
