Tips for Teachers

  1. Reading is an essential activity for educated people
  2. Get students reading.  It doesn’t matter what they read; just that they are reading.
  3. Provide students with the opportunity to read silently and to each other.
  4. Literacy is about reading; not about definitions
  5. Teachers hold the key to success in reading; work with another teacher or with reading specialists
  6. Build lessons from material that students know and relate to
  7. Engaging in your own Professional Development to enhance the quality of instruction is fundamental to improving reading levels
  8. Use best practices to introduce students to reading that is fun and enjoyable
  1. Utilise a variety of activities to engage students in reading: Literacy sessions, reading clubs, field outings, reading corners, storytelling, library visits, acting out stories etc.
  2. Showcase the sharing of best practices within OECS
  3. Connect with literacy specialists and ELP Coordinators in your area to guide you
  4. Focus on child-centred learning activities.
  5. Implement the revised formative assessment and summative assessment in your classroom so that you know the reading level of every student in your class.  Differentiate instruction based on this knowledge
  6. Making reading fun is critical
  7. Bring joy to the classroom
