New River Estate Sugar Mill, located on the eastern side of Nevis, was the last functioning estate on Nevis (1958).  With its massive machinery, elegant chimney, ruined great house with volcanic stone colonnade, the mill offers the visitor a glimpse of the days "when sugar was king". Neighbouring Coconut Walk Estate has a lime kiln used to burn coral to make lime, which was used for construction.
