Talent Tuesdays: Kavem Hodge

In an effort to recognise our young people making strides, every week we will feature at least one young person from the OECS on Talent Tuesday. This week we feature 4 outstanding cricketers from UWI Cavehill Campus. In this piece, we feature Kavem Hodge.

Kavem Hodge is a multitalented cricketer on the cricket scene who has plans to bat you out of the stadium! Fresh out of the island of Dominica, this young and talented individual is getting ready to put on his helmet and face the world.

Hodge was scouted for not only his incredible talent but his academics as well by the Dominica Cricket Association and was soon brought to play the sport for the University of the West Indies Cavehill Campus. Having this opportunity did not come as too much of a shock to Hodge, for he already was registered in numerous cricketing associations back home. All that mattered on approaching the shores of Barbados was to maintain his good grades.

His talent has erupted and gushed all over the Caribbean region.

Playing for the St.Lucia Zouks, Combined Campus & Colleges (CCC), UWI CaveHill  Blackbirds, Dominica Senior Team, Windward Islands Volcanoes and West Indies under 19 enhanced his skill and abilities as a bowler ( left arm spin & part time bowler) and his role as a batsman for his teams ( right-arm). Moreover, his love and passion for the sport motivate him to further pursue his dream of playing for the West Indies Senior Team. Hodge is always hungry to succeed!

Being a student-athlete isn’t easy. In Hodge`s case, he has managed to be consistent in doing his school work and maintain his grades whilst on tour thus far.

Also, there are several changes with regards to cricket development in the Caribbean Hodge would like to see. He believes that communication and relationships between the board (The cricket board WICB) and players need to be improved. They tend to inform the players of upcoming events at the last minute which causes major problems for the players who have to balance school. However, Kavem Hodge doesn’t let this get the best of him.

He advises the youth who aspire to become professional athletes and wanting to pursue a degree to be disciplined, focus and word hard because there will be many distractions.

A trick Hodge has a habit of performing before a match is visualising what he wants to achieve. He pictures success instead of failure like any great athlete.

Furthermore, after he completes his Bachelor`s degree in Sports Science, Hodge plans on becoming a permanent fixture on the Windward Islands team whilst also playing for the West Indies.
