Sydel Charles is a 19 year old aspiring Graphic Designer and Natural Hair enthusiast hailing from the home of the twin peaks, Saint Lucia.
In 2015, Sydel became Co-founder of a Natural hair advocacy group “758 Naturals”.
A group focused on empowering natural haired men and women of Saint Lucia, enabling them to accept themselves, their history and their hair. With her love for graphic design and photography the group has created an avenue for her to share her talent while sharing information.
Sydel loves challenges and finding new ways of solving problems. Therefore, when briefed on the OECS Yes Project, she was elated to know that there was an opportunity to impact the youth not only in Saint Lucia but also youth within the OECS while using her growing skills.
She describes the experience as a good one. It allowed her to network with persons from different islands and learn new skills. “I never knew that I was able to write per say” she remarked, “but getting the opportunity to interview talented individuals and write articles on them was a great learning experience for me and I saw that I had the ability to write.”
For other young people in the OECS, Sydel leaves this advice “Make opportunities for yourself, the door would always seem closed until you try to open it and realize that it’s always been unlocked.”
