Humble, self-driven and determined are only few words to describe 23 year old Saint Lucian, Francis Butcher. An avid animator who also has a background in body art, dance, sound and effects has seen the need to recently tie all these art forms together with film. Although his exposure to film is not as vast as his animation, he has managed to enjoy the bittersweet journey thus far.
“Seeing your idea come to life feels great honestly and being in the company of others who share that vision is liberating”. This is exactly how Francis feels about being a part of the team at ‘Malfinis Theatre Film and Animation Studio’. He also assures the production of content that would later boost Caribbean culture.
Francis indicated that as an artist, all he hopes for is equality and respect. He stands for fairness, togetherness and a community like spirit where each one helps one.
Given the challenge of producing one illustration, using either pencil and paper or graphics tablet and computer, Francis chose to draw nothing else but characters, be it comic book characters, cartoon characters or characters who were inspired by humans. When asked why he expressed that this was his starting point in animation and illustration.
Francis has encountered a few set backs in his journey however his biggest setback has been late exposure to the necessary technology. Nonetheless, he has pushed through and aims to inspire younger artists to follow their dreams. His hope is that younger generation of artists learn to surpass his work and strive to make bigger and better animation in Saint Lucia and the rest of the Caribbean.
“I think the way you treat people directly affects how people see you and as an artist you depend on people around you for support. I think helping someone be as good as you, feels good. So I do it.” - Francis Butcher
