Shanya Evans, while in the process of applying for Bachelor's of Laws, stumbled upon the BSc. International Relations. This field caught her attention and upon further research she chose to pursue it over her lifelong dream of being a corporate lawyer. "I can always go straight to law school", was what she told her parents. In her final year of university Shanya found her passion, International Security specifically climate change and sustainable development.
Shanya aspires to be directly involved in the development of small island developing states, such as her island St. Lucia, by influencing how they mitigate climate change effects. YES I INHERIT, the OECS YES environment and sustainable development pillar, coupled with the global move towards digital technology led her to be a part of this internship. Additionally, with a minor in Communication Studies Shanya saw Digital Marketing as the ideal internship to complement her theoretical knowledge.
The internship opened her eyes to the intricacies of social media management and the importance of brand strategy and marketing, while strengthening her written communication skills and teaching her the art of creating effective graphic content. What she found most rewarding, however, was engaging with and learning from the youth during OECS YES themed Twitter chats. "I love how OECS YES has given a voice to the youth. There are a number of young people who are want change and if given the chance would be committed to doing more than just speaking out".
