Asha Nelson - Innovative Problem Solver

Asha Nelson, a 22 year old, young and fresh St. Lucian is a dedicated problem solver. She is a determined and hardworking, strong independent woman who currently has a Bsc. in Sociology with Law from the University of the West Indies, Cave Hill Campus. She is interested in developmental studies because she has the urge to make society a better place for everyone. Also, is currently pursuing a Msc.in Gender Studies at UWI Cave Hill. However, her ultimate goal is to obtain a PhD in Development Studies / Sociology.

She would like to develop specific programmes and help change policies to assist society. She is also passionate about regional integration. Asha believes that in the Caribbean, there is a lot of raw talent in each and every Caribbean island. She believes that this “raw material” needs to be refined and developed because "We are stronger together". She believes that regional integration provides a golden avenue for Caribbean citizens. Regional integration can assist citizens with entrepreneurship e.g. persons can start their own businesses. Businesses can even invest amongst each other (local & regional).  She also believes that regional integration allows us to support each other (regional producers). Therefore working together would show support and unity, & also increase creativity, employment, and entrepreneurship within the Caribbean region.

She got involved in the OECS internship program by way of a teacher's ( Dr. Donna Greene UWI Cave Hill Lecturer) advice and soon found out that it was the job for her. She experienced many things during her internship. Such things include an introduction to computer graphic designs (which she absolutely no experience in) and getting to learn things outside of her normal comfort zone. She also got to meet new people from different islands around the Caribbean due her interviews she had with them. This helped craft her creativity and writing skills as well as her time management. Overall, this internship gave her a feeling of belonging and self worth. Her dreams are coming true.
