Wildlife Sanctuaries British Virgin Islands: Anegada Rock Iguana Head Start Facility

Short Overview

The Anegada Rock Iguana is unique to the Virgin Islands.  They are only found on Anegada and Guana Island and are in the top twenty (20) most endangered species in the world. Fully grown adults are dark grey with a zig-zag crest running down the centre of their backs.  They have a heavy set with thick legs and an average 1.5 metres (5 feet) in length. As they are endangered, the BVI National Parks Trust raises juvenile iguanas at a facility in the Settlement and then reintroduces them to the wild. The facility has an interpretation centre and signs and viewing the iguanas in the cages has become a popular tourist attraction on Anegada.
