Aquatic Fauna Sanctuaries British Virgin Islands: Wreck of the RMS Rhone

Short Overview

RMS Rhone was a UK Royal Mail Ship owned by the Royal Mail Steam Packet Company (RMSP). She was wrecked off the coast of Salt Island on 29 October 1867 in a hurricane, breaking into two halves and killing 123 people. The wreck is well preserved in the sandy bottom and her steel wreckage has become home to a myriad species of fish and encrusting corals. The bow section lies in about 80 feet of water and reveals the coral encrusted cargo hold and other interior chambers. The area is a very popular Caribbean wreck dive site.
