The Obelisk was created back in 1980. The actual physical structure was initially done by the National Youth Council on land provided by the Government of St. Vincent and the Grenadines to commemorate the life and passing of Paramount Chief Chatoyer. 
Each community of indigenous people had their village chief so in time of war when all the villages joined together to fight the common enemy someone was elected chief of Chief. At the time of the wars between the indigenous people and the Europeans (British), the indigenous people elected Chatoyer and the French who supported the indigenous people and they fought under the generalship of Chatoyer. Over the year the site has been upgraded by the Department of Culture in the Ministry of Tourism.
